The single frame that sets the tone for everything else.
As a teen, one of my favorite activities was photoshopping myself and my friend’s faces onto movie posters. I would dream of designing posters some day with actual movie stars. Fast forward and now I have created key art and creative concepts for some of my favorite directors and illustrated esteemed actors I grew up idolizing.
As a ginormous film nerd, I think one of the most fascinating and challenging design areas is key art. Creating a singular image that will represent the entirety of a filmmaker’s vision is such a gargantuan task. The required elements need to work in tandem and lure in the viewer and work in many sizes and instances. The logo, names, photography and illustrations need to be memorable and captivating in both large poster format and able to be seen clearly while scrolling streaming platforms.
There have been so many poster artists over the years that have inspired my approach to the artform and I hope to continue the time honored tradition and contribute to the legacy!
